Best places to avoid crowds on dreamy holiday to Tenerife

Send Push

Each year millions of Brits head to to kick back, relax, and enjoy some stunning scenery. One of the preferred tourist destinations of many UK , there's no doubt that things can get busy on one of the most famous

If you are heading to Tenerife for some much-needed winter sun over the next few months while the UK will undoubtedly be subjected to cold frosts and rainy days, or if you're planning your next summer holiday - but you're keen to get some time away from the busy crowds during your visit, you have to make some time to check out these serene, quieter spots.

You'd be forgiven for assuming in such a popular tourist destination there aren't that many quiet places to decompress and get away from it all, but whether it's just for an afternoon, or the bulk of your holiday, there are plenty of beautiful and peaceful places on the island for you to enjoy.

First up, if you're desperate for some time relaxing on the beach, but keen to get out of the crowds, you need to check out some of the island's northern beaches. Some of these take a little bit more planning to get to, but they are well worth it if you're seeking some peace and quiet. The main tourist areas are located on the southern side of the island - Playa de las Américas for instance and Los Cristianos are always pretty heaving, but to the north, you'll find some of the beaches the locals themselves prefer.

Playa de Antequera is going to take a bit of effort to get to, but according to , is seen as the best beach in Tenerife by the local community. You can grab a short boat ride from Igueste de San Andrés to get there, or if you're feeling adventurous, hike to the secluded spot, which will take you a couple of hours but ensures you've seriously earned your chilling out time at the other end.

If you're looking for a beach visit that is more accessible but still pretty peaceful, then try out Playa de Benijo or Playa de las Gaviotas. You can get to both of these by car or footpath and will be treated to some unforgettable scenery and formations of volcanic rock once you're there.

Mount Tiede is also well worth a visit. The third-highest volcano in the world dominates Tenerife's landscape, so it's not exactly a secret spot, and most people travel up it on the iconic cable car. However, if you feel like getting away from the crowds and getting back to nature you can hike up, but it's not an easy journey. To go beyond La Rambleta and get to the very top, you need to get a permit in advance so this also requires some planning. New tourist taxes are also being introduced to Mount Tiede and other natural sites after protests from locals over the unsustainable mass tourism model in place on the island. This tax will come into place from 1 January 2025, so make sure you are properly prepared.

The hike up Mount Tiede takes around seven hours to the summit, or around five and a half to La Rambleta. If this feels like it might be too much for you and your family, then consider going for a less intense hike around Parque Nacional del Teide where there are some stunning walks that will still give you some much-needed time away from it, without the elevation.

Punta de Teno is well worth a visit if you're desperate to enjoy some time away from the crowds, the stunning peninsula offers rugged scenery, the opportunity to explore caves, and visit a historic lighthouse and some beautiful beaches. There are restrictions on visitors in place to ensure the protection of the delicate natural environment, while you can't get there by car easily in the day, you can still walk or take public transport to the unforgettable area.
