Brits use soup as sauce as expert shares tips for cooking perfect Bolognese

Brits are taking their pasta game to wild new levels, with quirky customs like chucking fiery hot sauce into penne and slathering spaghetti with ketchup.

A poll of 2,000 adults has uncovered that nearly half think it's practically a sin to have pasta without any sauce, yet those sauce fiends aren't shy about getting creative – 16% have even used tinned soup to create the perfect dish.

Dolmio helmed the survey in celebration of World Pasta Day on the 25th October, shedding light on some truly unconventional toppings like barbecue dazzle, curry zing, and even mustard.

Dolmio’s very own top sauce taster, Bart Kuzianik, who dedicates over 30 gruelling hours each month to perfecting saucy goodness, chimed in: "What is pasta without the saucea? We're here to remind customers that tasty sauces needn't be a challenge."

The deep dive revealed that Bolognese, tomato with a hint of basil, and pesto are the nation's go-to sauce staples, followed by carbonara's creamy dream and the ever-popular cheese sauce. When it comes to what to toss into the pot, cheese, chicken, beef, or pork come out tops, while spaghetti takes the crown for the carb of choice.

Kuzianik further elaborates on the alchemy behind sublime sauce pairings: "There’s a true art and science to finding the perfect harmony of ingredients, whether it's classic tomato and basil, something spicy, or a creamy concoction."

Kuzianik spills his top tip: "Never serve pasta on the side. Always mix your pasta in with the mince and sauce before serving. This ensures that the pasta is coated in all those delicious flavours, giving you a perfect bite every time," he insists.

For the chief sauce taster, the key to a perfect Bolognese lies in a surprising ingredient - pasta water. "Pasta water is actually magic" he says, "Here's a secret: save a splash of pasta water before draining. Stirring it into the sauce helps create a silky-smooth texture, making the Bolognese even more delicious."

To finalise the dish: "Cheese can completely transform the dish. Pecorino packs a punch with its bold, aggressive flavour, while Parmigiano adds a rich, savoury touch. Mix and match for the ultimate cheesy showdown! ".
