DI Ray viewers all say same thing minutes into second series as ITV show returns

DI Ray viewers were all left saying the same thing as they tuned into the first episode of the second series.

Fans will remember series made its TV debut back in May 2022 starring Parminder Nagra, following Rachita Ray as she investigated the murder of high-profile criminal Imran Aziz, all against a backdrop of systemic racism in the police force.

Weeks after her suspension, DI Ray was back in the hot seat on Sunday (October 20) as series two kicked off with a fatal drive-by shooting of an innocent nurse outside a Birmingham hospital.

The don of the Chapman gang was gunned down alongside a young nurse outside of Birmingham hospital. The nurse was in the wrong place at the wrong time, so fans are made to believe, but the murder of Frank Chapman signaled a brewing gang war.

However, before the drama kicked off, fans rushed to their keyboards to share their excitement at the return of the popular television series. Taking to X, formerly known as , one fan penned: "So glad #DIRay is back." Another added: "Good to have #DIRay back." A third person wrote: :Thank you, @ITV for finally letting the UK watch series 2 of #DIRay.

Viewers later learned that DCI Kerry Henderson (Gemma Whelan) fought to bring Rachita back onto the force and Supt Beardsmore (Ian Puleston-Davies) was still thinly veiling his racism and contempt for Rachita being back at the office.

She's cleared of all criminality surrounding her fiancé Martin's (Jamie Bamber) sex trafficking exploits, and Beardsmore let her off with "words of advice" for "bullying" and not playing well with management. However, there was no time to enjoy coffee in the breakroom, because the gangs were already working on their retribution for the murder before Rachita can file an initial report.

The only eyewitness to Frank's murder got beaten within an inch of his life before Rachita's team could track him down. When interviews with the Chapman family proved unfruitful, the inspector decided to interview local shop owners.

She came across a shawarma chef who revealed tensions brewing between the Chapmans and the Mochani family, who recently moved into Birmingham from Leicester. On the same night, he shawarma chef got threatened by masked assailants and threatened to keep his mouth shut about the Mochanis.

Rachita sent Kwesi (Peter Bankolé) to watch the Mochani jewelry shop while she and Clive (Steve Oram) staked out Frank's wake. It soon became clear that the Chapmans were aware they are being watched, but they didn't know about Kwesi keeping an eye on the Mochani shop. Two more masked men later kidnap Rav Mochani (Taha Rahim) and throw him into the back of an unmarked van.

Rachita and Clive ditch the wake to chase the van and she refused to let up even though Clive begged her to slow the car down. They didn't have backup for chasing the van, and she almost got them killed on the motorway. An oncoming van managed to evade Rachita and Clive, leaving Rachita swearing on the side of the road as she watched them get away with Rav trapped in the back.

Rachita knows that Frank was killed by someone he thought he could trust and that the Mochanis were likely involved. The question remains: can she figure out who pulled the trigger before an all-out gang war erupts in Birmingham, and can she do it without completely losing herself in the case once again
