Jarrod Bowen told what he needs to do at West Ham to earn spot in England's World Cup squad

Former West Ham striker Bobby Zamora believes Jarrod Bowen remains on track for a place in England’s World Cup squad despite the Hammers’ form. Bowen played just 14 minutes during the September international break, and competition for spots in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for next summer is sure to be fierce.

The 28-year-old scored his first senior international goal against Ireland last year, and top-scored for West Ham with 13 league goals last season. Club captain Bowen is also off the mark for the new season, scoring the opener in a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest before the international break, but Graham Potter’s side sit just outside the bottom three after three matches.

“I think he's just got to keep doing what he has been doing,” Zamora said. “Take West Ham performances out and just looking at Jarrod and his individual game, it's always been there, he's always a threat, he's always producing good performances.

“Callum Wilson [is] there now as well, another guy who's going to add that attacking presence to that West Ham team and they need it, I think. Hopefully he can stay fit and I think it will be a positive start if we can keep these two guys on fire.”

Zamora was part of the West Ham side which narrowly avoided relegation in 2007, scoring key goals during the run-in. Graham Potter’s side were never in serious danger of the drop last term despite their lowly league position, but three points from the first three games of the new season puts extra pressure on the boss going into this weekend’s derby against Tottenham.

“He's had a hard time,” Zamora, who also had two spells with Potter’s former club Brighton, added. “I'm really glad he won on the last game out against Forest, I was a little bit nervous about that game, but [it’s] three points on the board.

“A huge game on the weekend which will certainly buy him a lot more credit with the fans if he can get a win against Spurs. I've got my fingers crossed, he's a lovely guy and a good coach as well, a really good coach. I'm thankful and hopeful he'll continue doing well.”

Zamora was speaking at the launch of the Sky Bet x British Heart Foundation ‘Red Boot’ trophy. The trophy will be awarded to the top scorer across the three divisions of the EFL, with £50,000 going to the charity for each goal scorer by that player in the league.

"It's an amazing scheme and a great cause, so we're just trying to build some awareness," he added. "If we can get half a million people to go on the British Heart Foundation, there's a revive tool which is basically people taking 15 minutes.

"You just need your phone, a pillow, go through the process, it talks you through it and hopefully you'll feel more confident if something does happen. They say eight out of 10 people who have a cardiac arrest, it's at home, so there's a good likelihood it will be someone you're close to if it does happen."
