In a thrilling encounter at Chepauk, Sunrisers Hyderabad secured a five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings, handing them their fourth consecutive defeat at home in IPL 2025. Despite both teams struggling in the points table, Hyderabad managed to stay in the playoff hunt with this nervy win, while Chennai’s batting woes continued to haunt them.
Chennai’s Batting Struggles
Chennai, underperforming this season, once again faltered with the bat. They lost early wickets, with the likes of Shaik Rasheed and Sam Curran falling quickly during the Powerplay. Despite getting to 50 runs in the first six overs, their batting continued to crumble. With Ravindra Jadeja unable to contribute significantly, Dewald Brewis was promoted to No. 4 and showed promise with a quick-fire 42 off 25 balls, but Chennai still could not reach a competitive total. Harshal Patel’s clever variations, including slow deliveries, helped Sunrisers dismiss Chennai for just 154 runs in 19.5 overs.
Hyderabad’s Nervy Chase
Hyderabad’s chase was far from smooth. Chennai’s bowlers, led by Jadeja, put up a solid fight, reducing Hyderabad to 38/3 early in the innings. However, Ishan Kishan’s composed 44 runs and Kamindu Mendis’ unbeaten 32 steered the Sunrisers closer to the target. Despite some tense moments, Hyderabad capitalized on a few bad overs from Sam Curran, managing to score 25 off Noor Ahmad’s two overs and 15 off Matheesha Pathirana’s. This allowed them to chase down the target with ease in 18.4 overs.
The win keeps Sunrisers alive in the race for the playoffs, while Chennai’s chances of making it to the top four continue to fade with each passing defeat. Despite introducing some fresh faces like Dewald Brewis and Ayush Mhatre, Chennai’s struggles with the bat have yet to be resolved, leaving them with a lot of work to do as the season progresses.
