As the IPL 2025 season resumes following a temporary suspension due to cross-border India-Pakistan tensions, fans of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are once again wondering whether this will be 's final season.
However, according to a Times of India report, the legendary skipper has not yet communicated any retirement plans to the CSK management. The 43-year-old, who has been an iconic figure for the franchise since the league's inception, is reportedly considering continuing into the 2026 season. While many believed this was a potential farewell season, the CSK camp believes there is more left in him.
The former champions have not had a memorable IPL 2025 season and are languishing at the bottom of the points table. With Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out mid-season due to an elbow injury, Dhoni stepped back into the captaincy role. Despite criticism about his age and poor batting form, CSK’s management is strong headed on Dhoni’s presence not just as a lower-order batter or wicketkeeper, but as a mentor guiding a young squad.
Sources close to the franchise feel that there are too many cons of Dhoni deciding to walk away now. CSK's campaign has been poor in 2025 through signings like Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, and Jamie Overton. However, some promise has been shown from young players like Dewald Brevis, Urvil Patel, and Ayush Mhatre as they have shone in the fag end of the season. The CSK management feels that the youngsters need a guiding hand like Dhoni’s to become future match-winners.
One positive this season has been Dhoni’s fitness. After battling knee issues in previous editions, Dhoni has kept wickets in every game and even chipped in with crucial lower-order runs. Those following him closely believed his body had held up better this year.
