India hits back at Canada for citing diplomats as 'persons of interest', calls it 'preposterous imputations'

The Government of India has dismissed Canada’s recent diplomatic communication, which identified the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in an investigation. India termed the allegations as “preposterous” and attributed them to the political agenda of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, driven by vote bank politics.

India emphasized that, since Trudeau made allegations against Indian diplomats in September 2023, the Canadian Government has failed to provide any evidence despite repeated requests. New assertions have been made without factual backing, further indicating, according to India, a deliberate strategy to tarnish India’s reputation.

India highlighted the deteriorating bilateral ties, pointing to incidents dating back to 2018, when Trudeau's visit to India was criticized for aligning with political interests linked to specific communities. India also accused Trudeau’s government of harboring individuals with separatist views and interfering in India’s internal politics, referencing events such as his comments on Indian farmers' protests in 2020.

The timing of Canada’s recent step, India argues, is politically motivated. Trudeau is scheduled to appear before a Commission investigating foreign interference in Canadian politics, and India believes the current developments are aimed at deflecting criticism directed at his government.

India further accused the Canadian government of providing a safe haven to violent extremists and organized criminals who threaten Indian diplomats and community leaders in Canada. Extradition requests for individuals involved in terrorism and organized crime have allegedly been ignored, with some cases of illegal immigrants fast-tracked for Canadian citizenship.

High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, India’s most senior diplomat with a 36-year-long career, was singled out by Canada in the investigation. India described the accusations against him as baseless and deserving of contempt.

India also stated it is closely monitoring the activities of the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi, which it claims align with the political agenda of the Trudeau administration. India warned that further steps may be taken in response, signaling a possible escalation of diplomatic tensions.
