Infants sold for over Rs 10 lakh each: Delhi Police bust child trafficking gang, reveal over 35 babies were trafficked

A gang allegedly involved in abducting and selling newborn babies has been busted in Delhi, according to a TOI report. Three people, including two women, have been arrested and two infants, one just four to five days old, have been rescued.

Police said the gang operated across state borders, mainly targeting remote villages and hospitals in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The newborns, some barely a few days old, were taken and kept in slum areas around Delhi before being sold to childless couples for anything between Rs 5 and Rs 10 lakh.

So far, at least 35 infants are believed to have been trafficked into Delhi. Authorities are now trying to trace the rescued babies’ families and uncover more about the network.

The breakthrough came on 8 April when Dwarka district’s special staff received a tip-off about an infant being sold in Uttam Nagar. Acting quickly, the police found a silver car parked near Uttam Nagar East Metro Station. Inside the vehicle, they found a baby crying due to hunger and the sweltering heat.

“A woman constable immediately picked up the baby and rushed him to hospital,” said a senior police officer. Doctors confirmed that the baby was only a few days old.

Who was arrested?

Police arrested Yasmin from Mohan Garden, Anjali from Malviya Nagar, and Jitendra from Madangir. Yasmin reportedly brought the baby from Krishna Colony slums, claiming he was transported from Gujarat. Anjali had arrived to collect the child and make the payment, while Jitendra was driving the car. The deal, worth Rs 5 lakh, was to be finalised on the spot.

During interrogation, Yasmin revealed the location of another baby. Police later managed to rescue the second infant. Officials are now trying to confirm the identities of the children’s biological parents.

Bigger network suspected

Preliminary investigations suggest the racket operated not just in slums, but also in upscale areas of Delhi. According to TOI sources, some medical professionals may also be involved, possibly helping the gang find buyers.

The accused have been taken into custody, and searches are underway in Gujarat and Rajasthan to find more members of the syndicate, including the suspected kingpin.
