The Election Commission of India is set to announce Jharkhand and Maharashtra election schedule on Tuesday at 3:30pm, following the conclusion of polls in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana.
The current term for the Maharashtra assembly ends on November 26, while the Jharkhand assembly will complete its term on January 5, 2025. In the 2019 elections, Jharkhand conducted polling in five phases, whereas Maharashtra had just one phase.
Given the successful conduct of recent elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the commission may implement a quicker polling process in Jharkhand this time around.
Maharashtra Assembly elections
The upcoming election will feature a two-way contest between the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition—comprising the UBT Sena, NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Congress—and the Maha Yuti Alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde), and NCP (Ajit Pawar).
The BJP and undivided Shiv Sena formed the government in 2019 but later split following some political drama. Of the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra, the BJP won 104 in 2019.
In the recent parliamentary elections, the BJP-led MYA won just 17 of Maharashtra's 48 Lok Sabha seats. The BJP's share fell to 9 seats, down from 23 five years ago. Meanwhile, the Maha Vikas Aghadi—comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharad Pawar)—secured 30 seats.
The below-par performance at the Centre prompted senior BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to resign from his post at the State. This was to concentrate on party activities in preparation for the assembly elections. However, after a party meeting where state BJP legislators passed a resolution expressing their confidence in him, Fadnavis announced that he would continue in his role.
Jharkhand Assembly elections
Jharkhand is expected to hold elections for its 81-member legislative assembly by December 2024, with a total of 2.59 crore electors are registered in the state with about 1.28 crore women voters, as of September 20.
In Jharkhand, power rests with the Soren family-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress alliance. However, the forthcoming elections may have all eyes on Hemant Soren, the CM who was jailed and accused of money laundering.
With Champai Soren taking charge briefly post Hemant Soren's arrest in February and later in July removed from the CM's post after bail, political drama had gripped Jharkhand. This led to Champai Soren quitting the JMM and joining the BJP in August alleging "disrespect" and "humiliation".
