Reliance-SpaceX deal: Jio to offer Starlink hardware, customer support setup underway

Reliance Jio will soon offer Starlink hardware at its retail outlets across India, allowing customers direct access to satellite internet equipment once SpaceX receives the necessary approvals to operate in the country, the company said in its quarterly results announced Friday.

The move is part of a recently signed agreement between Jio and SpaceX to bring Starlink’s broadband services to Indian users. Notably, Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio's rival Bharti Airtel had also inked a deal with Elon Musk's satcom company.

Jio will not only sell Starlink equipment but will also put in place a dedicated customer service mechanism to support installation and activation.

Reliance Jio Platforms Limited reported strong growth in its March quarter performance, with revenue rising 17.8% year-on-year to Rs 39,853 crore. The company posted a quarterly EBITDA of Rs 17,016 crore, marking an 18.5% year-on-year increase.

“Jio and SpaceX are also evaluating other complementary areas of cooperation to leverage their respective infrastructure to enhance India’s digital ecosystem further,” Reliance Industries Limited said.

The agreement between the two companies, which had already been announced in March, is subject to regulatory clearances.

Once approved, this collaboration could significantly boost internet access in rural and remote areas by combining Jio’s local presence with Starlink’s low-earth-orbit satellite technology.

As per experts, India's top two telecom operators can combine Starlink in their existing bouquet of offerings with easy payment and installation options. This would likely make Starlink services cost-effective than simply offering it as a standalone niche product.

As of March 2025, Jio’s total subscriber base stood at over 488 million, including 191 million True 5G users. The growing adoption of 5G and expansion in home broadband services pushed annual data traffic to approximately 185 exabytes, a 24% increase over the previous year.

Average revenue per user (ARPU) also improved to Rs 206.2 as against Rs 203 in Q3 FY25, supported by the full impact of recent tariff hikes.
