The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for rain, light thunderstorms, and lightning in parts of Tamil Nadu, with the forecast predicting moderate rainfall across several districts.
The regional IMD center in Chennai alerted residents to exercise caution on Saturday, saying that weather conditions could likely cause waterlogging, slippery roads, and traffic disruptions in some areas.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Nagapattinam districts, as well as the Karaikal region.
The weather department’s update, issued at 1:00 PM today, also includes expectations of rainfall in other districts such as Theni, Tenksasi, Ramanathapuram, and Kanyakumari.
Heavy rainfall in Tiruppur and Kanyakumari
Tiruppur district saw heavy rains causing water to enter residential homes. Local municipal workers have been engaged in efforts to drain floodwaters. Tiruppur North recorded a significant 11 cm of rain, while the Kozhiporvilai station in Kanyakumari saw an even higher 19 cm of rainfall.
Other areas, such as Nambiyur and Kavundapadi in Erode, along with Sulur in Coimbatore, received around 8 cm each.
In the Ramanathapuram district, rainfall varied from 1 cm to 7 cm, with the Rameswaram station recording the highest at 7 cm. Locations such as Kadaladi, Mudukulatur, and Mandapam received between 1-2 cm of rain.
The IMD has warned that the ongoing weather conditions could lead to disruptions in local infrastructure, particularly in terms of traffic. With continued rainfall and possible thunderstorms, roads may become slippery, and waterlogging could cause delays.
In addition to Tamil Nadu, parts of Kerala, Puducherry, and surrounding regions have also experienced similar weather patterns.
While some areas are facing heavy rainfall, others are witnessing a significant dip in temperatures, which are reported to be 2-5 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average.
