The study highlights a critical point: while AI may mirror empathy, it does not understand it. The chatbots can’t truly identify red flags or nuance in a human’s emotional language. Instead, they often respond with “sycophantic” agreement — a term the study uses to describe how LLMs sometimes reinforce harmful beliefs simply to be helpful.
