Delhi Airport update: Flight operations affected until May 4 – details inside

Send Push
Significant aircraft delays and interruptions are expected through May 4, 2025, for passengers leaving from New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). In addition to one of the airport's four runways being temporarily closed for maintenance, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has issued this alert because of changing wind patterns.

On April 8, the main runway, 28/10, was closed for an Instrument Landing System (ILS) upgrade. The goal of this system upgrade is to increase overall operational efficiency and low-visibility landings. The airport's capacity has been constrained by the shutdown, particularly during busy times.

A change from westerly to easterly winds has made matters worse by further restricting operations. Only two runways (09 and 11L) are open for departures and only one (11R) is open for arrivals when there is an easterly breeze. One of the busiest airports in the nation has been negatively impacted by this restriction, which has resulted in an average of 240 flight delays daily.
Impact on flight operations

Due to a runway closure and some less-than-cooperative winds, delays at Delhi Airport have been reported. On a recent Monday, more than 200 flights were grounded for a bit longer than expected, with delays averaging around 30 minutes. Reportedly, no planes had to do any unexpected detours due to the said delays.
