Dental Health: To maintain a healthy body, we need to pay attention to the health of all organs. When it comes to good health, we often discuss organs like the heart, lungs, and liver, but the health of teeth and gums is often overlooked.
Health experts say this problem is rapidly increasing, and studies have linked poor gum health to a variety of health problems, including heart disease.
We all know that brushing your teeth twice a day is essential for a pearly white smile. While this is essential, we also need to pay attention to other factors. Dentists say there are several foods that not only increase the risk of yellowing of your teeth but can also cause gum-related problems.
If you consume these foods, be careful.
What does your dentist advise?
Speaking to Amar Ujala, dentist Dr. Arifa Khan explains that even if you diligently follow a good oral hygiene routine, such as brushing twice daily, certain foods can undo all that hard work. Certain foods can also increase the risk of tooth discoloration.
Dr. Khan says, "This is a common problem we see daily in our clinic, and one that patients often worry about. Damage to the enamel, the outer layer of teeth, causes a yellow layer called dentin to appear. If you want to avoid this, make some dietary adjustments."
Sugary foods are harmful to teeth.
Sugar-rich foods are considered the biggest enemy of teeth. When we eat too much sugar or frequently consume foods like cold drinks, juices, and candy, bacteria in the mouth convert it into acid. This acid damages the outer layer of teeth, leading to cavities and tooth decay. According to a report by the American Dental Association, excessive sugar consumption is the main cause of tooth decay in children.
Cold Drinks and Energy Drinks
If you drink too many cold drinks or soda, it can also increase dental problems. These contain sugar, as well as phosphoric and citric acid, which wear down the enamel of your teeth. Long-term consumption can lead to tooth sensitivity, yellowing, and gum inflammation.
Smoking and Tobacco Use
Smoking, cigarettes, bidis, gutkha, or pan masala not only discolor your teeth but also cause periodontal disease by disrupting blood circulation in the gums. Medical reports indicate that 40% of oral cancer cases worldwide are linked to tobacco use. Furthermore, tobacco weakens the gums, leading to loose teeth.
Bad Habit of Brushing Hard
Many people think that the harder they brush, the cleaner their teeth will be. However, this wears down the enamel and increases gum problems. According to research published in the British Dental Journal, excessive brushing can affect both teeth and gums.
Dietary Disorders
A lack of calcium and vitamin D weakens both teeth and gums. Junk food, highly acidic foods, and fast food not only damage teeth but also reduce bone strength. People whose diets lack dairy products and green vegetables are more likely to develop cavities and gum disease.
Excessive Tea and Coffee Consumption
Excessive tea and coffee consumption can also cause yellowing of your teeth. This is because tea contains tannins, a type of polyphenol that is often yellow or brown in color. When tannins penetrate your enamel, they often cause a green or grayish tint to your teeth.
