Kottankulangara Devi Temple: Although there are many unique temples in India, they have different beliefs. Chamaivilakku Festival

Chamaivilakku festival celebrated at Kottankulangara Sri Devi Temple located in Chavara in Kollam district is a unique and famous festival of Kerala. This festival lasts for 10 to 12 days in March every year. On its last day, men dress like women with full devotion and dedication.

This tradition is especially followed by men living within a radius of 5 km around the temple, but a large number of people also come from far-off places.

The story and tradition of Chamaivilakku
This tradition is centuries old and is based on a folktale. It is said that earlier some cowherds used to worship a stone considering it a goddess and used to play around with it after dressing up as girls. One day suddenly the goddess appeared from that stone. This miraculous event spread throughout the village and then a temple was established there. Since then, this tradition has been going on that men dress up like women to please the goddess.

Pray to fulfill your wishes.
Men worship the goddess after shaving their mustaches and beards, applying makeup on their faces, and wearing beautiful colorful sarees. They do all this to fulfill their wishes, get rid of sins or get rid of debts.

When to go?
The best time to visit this temple is the month of March. The main event takes place between 2 am and 5 am. During this time, a huge crowd of devotees gathers. Temporary beauty parlors are also set up outside the temple for men to dress up.
