The upcoming showdown between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday is one of the most crucial match for both teams as one team will get the chance to earn a spot in the IPL 2025 Playoffs. The stakes couldn’t be higher but rain threatens to play spoilsport.
According to Accuweather, the weather is expected to be cloudy in Mumbai on May 21 in the evening, while the probability of precipitation is 25%. With the cloud cover also set to be at 100%, the much-anticipated contest between the two sides could witness stoppages.
The BCCI recently extended the reserve time for IPL matches from one hour to two. The rule was originally meant only for playoff matches it has already been implemented during the CSK vs RR match, and will apply here as well.

IPL 2025 playoff qualification scenario if MI vs DC gets washed out
Heading into this match, Mumbai Indians hold a slight edge with 14 points, while Delhi Capitals trail closely with 13. But if the match is washed out and both teams share a point each, it will be Delhi who holds the advantage going into the final round of league matches.
Here’s how the qualification scenarios would unfold if rain forces a no-result
Scenario 1: Delhi Capitals Qualification chances
If MI vs DC is abandoned and each team gets one point, Delhi moves to 14 points, and MI to 15. Delhi can then qualify by Beating Punjab Kings in their final game and hope that Mumbai loses to Punjab Kings in their final game. This would leave Delhi at 16 points and MI stuck at 15, enough for DC to sneak into the top four.
Scenario 2: Mumbai Indians Qualification chances
Even with a washout, Mumbai maintains the upper hand and has two routes to the playoffs. Firstly, MI must defeat Punjab Kings in their final league game, helping them move to 17 points, enough to seal qualification regardless of other results. The second option is that if MI loses to PBKS, they can still qualify if Delhi also loses to PBKS, leaving MI ahead on 15 points versus DC's 14.
