Bhubaneswar: A 15-year-old girl from Odisha’s Puri district, who was battling for her life after suffering 75% burn injuries, died at AIIMS Delhi. Hours after her death, the case took a dramatic turn as the Odisha Police reported that no one else was involved in the incident, contradicting earlier allegations of assault by three unidentified men.
The victim’s father later released an emotional video claiming that his daughter had taken her own life due to mental distress.

Police Say No One Else Involved
The teenager was allegedly set on fire on July 19 in the Balanga area of Puri, after which she was rushed by locals to a nearby hospital and later shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was airlifted to AIIMS Delhi the next day, but succumbed despite intensive treatment efforts.
Initial accounts, including eyewitness statements and the FIR filed by the girl’s mother, pointed towards a brutal crime committed by three men who allegedly brought her to a riverbank, tied her hands, poured kerosene on her, and set her ablaze.
However, in a sudden change of stance, the Odisha Police said their investigation was nearing completion and that “no other person was involved.” They did not explain how the girl caught fire or address the previous testimonies. “We request everyone not to make any sensitive comments regarding this matter during this tragic moment,” the police added, as quoted by NDTV.
Grieving Father Appeals for Peace, Confirms Mental Trauma
Amid the outrage, the girl’s father released a video appealing for calm and urging people not to politicise the tragedy. “I have lost my daughter. She ended her life due to mental stress. The trauma she faced was unbearable,” he said in the clip.
He thanked the Odisha government for their support and pleaded for privacy and peace, saying, “All I want now is peace for my daughter.”
