A R Rahman Copyright Allegations: Famous music director AR Rahman and film production company Madras Talkies are once again in controversy. The song 'Veera Raja Veera' from his film Ponniyin Selvan 2 is now surrounded by copyright allegations. Giving a big verdict in this case, the Delhi High Court has ordered AR Rahman and Madras Talkies to deposit Rs 2 crore.
Accused of stealing tune from 'Shiv Stuti'
This controversy has come to the fore after a petition filed by classical singer Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar. He claimed in the court that the song 'Veera Raja Veera' closely matches the 'Shiv Stuti' presented by his father Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar and uncle Zahiruddin Dagar. He alleged that the tune and sentiments of the song have been copied from 'Shiv Stuti', but the Dagar family was not given any credit for it.
Credit will have to be given on OTT platform
Hearing this petition, the court said that 'Veera Raja Veera' is not just inspired by 'Shiv Stuti', but is a modified form of its composition. Justice Pratibha M Singh clearly said that a classical composition has been used in the song, but neither credit nor acknowledgement was taken from its original creators. The court also directed that it would be mandatory to give credit to the Dagar brothers on all digital platforms of the song and the film.
AR Rahman put forward his side
Faiyaz Dagar had approached the court in 2023. He said that he contacted AR Rahman several times, but initially Rahman did not give any kind of recognition. Later accepted to some extent, but despite the talks, no concrete solution was found.
At the same time, AR Rahman said in his defense that 'Shiva Stuti' is a traditional Dhrupad style composition, which is part of the public domain. He also told that 'Veera Raja Veera' is an original composition, composed with modern musical techniques and 227 layers, which is different from traditional Indian music. However, the court has passed this order rejecting Rahman's arguments.
