Some theatre workers called the opening weekend of A Movie, which saw the film gross more than £230million, a "nightmare".

The film's director, Jared Hess, has since weighed in on the unexpected reaction to the -starring film, saying he is glad people are "making memories" while attending the film.

The director said he had seen many "funny videos" and was glad people were "making memories with their friends and families".

While some praised Hess for noting the positive audience reactions, others did not condone the wilder side of audiences. Some were seen launching full bags of popcorn across the theatre and screaming after hearing leading man Jack Black, who plays Steve, say "chicken jockey".

Hess commented on this, also, and says it is "" the police were called on people "having too much fun". He : "It's weird when you're having too much fun and the cops get called.

"It's funny because I think it's just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn. Yeah, it's hilarious. I've seen so many funny videos.

"It's great, especially when people are climbing on their friends' shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments. It's like this crazy anticipation. But, man, I'm just glad people are making memories with their friends and families."

Hess' comments have split the public, with some suggesting that while it is fun to attend the movies with friends, some A Minecraft Movie attendees are taking it a step too far.

One user wrote: "This is acceptable but throwing popcorn and drinks at other people in the audience that are simply just watching the movie isn’t cool."

Another added: "Yeah sure thing man, let’s encourage these people and their inconsiderate behaviour." A third wrote: "Making memories is like when I saw paranormal activity with half my school in the cinema and we were scared as s**t. None of us were throwing live chickens around and going crazy."

Some were fine with people enjoying it but say the online craze had seen some take it a step too far. One wrote: "It's cool people are enjoying it, but I've seen videos of people bringing like industrial sized bags if popcorn and just throwing it everywhere, that s**t is annoying."
