'My awful first date was so awkward - he'd only ramble about himself'

Everyone has different expectations on afirst date. Perhaps you're looking for someone who makes you laugh, or you want to get to know each other more. However, it's usually a given that your date should ask you some questions. It can feel awkward if you end up with a one-sided conversation.

Unfortunately, one Reddit user says that's precisely what happened to them recently during a first date. Keen to vent about the "absolutely awful" experience, the social media user took to the platform to share what had happened.

Posting on r/dating, the post's author complained that their date barely spoke, only answering questions about himself and not asking any in return. To make matters worse, the author devised a test to see if the date would continue the conversation when they stopped making the effort, but he failed the test.

They shared the story in a post titled: "Worst first date." The author claimed: "Just when you think it can’t get worse… It can. I just got done with the worst date I think I’ve been on yet.

"I met a guy for drinks, and the whole time, he kept blankly staring at me. I would ask him questions or make small talk, and he would then ramble on about himself for a little while, and then when he was done with his self-speech, he would just stop and stare at me, like a deer in headlights."

Unfortunately, the date didn't improve. "At one point, I just sat there silently, to test it out to see if he would even be able to continue the conversation on his own.

"But that definitely didn’t happen." The post concluded: "I normally don’t drink, but for this date I needed to. Absolutely awful, and so awkward."

While it's possible the date felt shy or nervous, or there was another reason he was having a bad day, it sounds like it's not going to work out. Reacting to the post, someone asked: "What made you go on the date?"

In response, the author explained that they thought they'd get on with their date. Understandably, they've since decided they probably won't be a match.

The response read: "I met him on an app. When we were talking on there, he seemed really sweet and a little bit better at holding conversation. There was some moments where I felt like I was carrying the text conversation, but I like to give people a chance cause I know sometimes people can be shy at first or bad texters yet have a really vibrant personality when talking in person.

"But that should’ve been my first red flag. He also appeared to have a lot of similar hobbies to me, so I thought we might get along. Not so much."
