One in four dog owners struggle with caring for aging pets, study reveals

One in four senior dog ownersconfessed that caring for an ageing pooch is more challenging than they anticipated. A survey of 2,000 dog carers revealed that those with a dogover the age of seven have made adjustments to their homes to cater to their changing needs, such as installing ramps.

One in five are 'constantly' concerned about theirdog's quality of lifeas they age. As a result, many have introduced special diets, medication and fewer walks to it easier for their pet. The research was commissioned by Royal Canin which established a dog park exclusively for elderly dogs– featuring ramps and orthopaedic beds.

The Golden Paws Park, located on Clapham Common, in London, included a range of enhancements to help older dogs remain active, healthy and content in their later years.

Georgie Woods-Lee, a pet nutrition specialist from University of Liverpool,collaborating with the brand, stated: "Just like us, dogs are all individuals – some may need extra support as they age. Golden Paws Park demonstrates how with the right care, older dogs can still lead vibrant, fulfilling lives."

"Whether it's adjusting walk routines, maintaining a healthy weight, focusing on mental stimulation, or using targeted supplements for joints, digestion or skin and coat, there's so much we can do to help them live happy, healthy lives," she added.

For those no longer able to jump onto or off a bench, easy access ramps were available for the VIPooches. Meanwhile, water bowls of adjustable height were scattered across the park so, regardless of size, the dogs didn't have to stretch for a drink.

Luxurious dog beds were available for those wanting to bask in the sun, as well as shaded rest areas for those seeking respite from the early morning sunshine.

Royal Canin has launched a new line of supplements, developed in collaboration with leading veterinary specialists, aimed at supporting joint health in older dogs.

Matt Mullen, a representative from the brand, stated: "Watching your dog grow older can be emotional – a journey filled with love, reflection, and sometimes uncertainty.

"But even in their twilight years, there's so much we can do to ensure they continue to live full, happy lives – and nutrition plays a vital role in that."
