Tesco is shaking up its meal deal selection from next week.

The supermarket chain has teamed up with the popular Asian-inspired restaurant Itsu and from October 21 will introduce the high street chain's dragon roll sushi range to its Premium Meal deal menu.

The range, priced at £4.75 individually, will be classed as a "main" as the supermarket and includes four varieties: Teriyaki Salmon, Vegetable Crunch, katsu chicken, and California. Each sushi pack comes with its own mayo sachet, sweet soy sauce, and a pot of crunchy tempura pieces - which are little batter balls. Itsu also noted that the trays also feature a border to prevent the sauce from spilling over the sides.

Itsu's grocery Managing Director Claudia Santagada said the chain had been working to deliver a sushi range for for "several years" as there were "so many challenges in terms of quality”. The move comes after research by revealed that sushi had overtaken smoked salmon sandwiches as the UK’s “favourite premium lunchtime treat”.

Tesco isn’t the first supermarket to collaborate with Itsu, as Sainsbury’s has long stocked a range of Itsu products as part of its wider range, including the chicken and spring onion gyoza, the chicken big bao, and the chicken ramen.

Tesco's meal deal consists of a main, snack and drink currently costs £4 without a Clubcard and £3.60 with one. Tesco's premium meal deal - which features Tesco Finest products and well-known brands such as YO! Sushi - currently sets you back £5 with a Clubcard or £5.50 without.

In August, Tesco hiked the price of its meal deal with a Clubcard by 20p from £3.40, while the price without a Clubcard increased from £3.90 to £4. Tesco told The that over 80% of customers bought meal deals with a Clubcard, and the supermarket said the decision was made after "recent improvements" to the quality of its range. Despite the price rise, Tesco said its meal deal remained "great value and the ideal way to grab lunch on-the-go”.

Alongside the new sushi range, Itsu has also expanded its frozen items with five new products. These includes frozen Chicken and Vegetable dumplings, Vegetable Tempura Fries, Glazed Miso Aubergine, and Pumpkin Crispy Fritters. The dumplings will cost you £3 for six, with the veggie snacks costing you £3.25. The new products will be introduced from 4 November.
