Ayurveda Day 2025: Can Ayurveda Help Treat Obesity? Experts Explain

Send Push

The central government aims to position Ayurveda not as a last resort but as the first choice in healthcare. As India celebrates Ayurveda Day on September 23, an important question arises: Does Ayurveda offer a solution for obesity?

Rising Obesity in India

Obesity, once seen largely in foreign countries, is now rapidly increasing in India too. Sedentary lifestyles, high stress levels, and the growing dependence on fried, oily, and refined fast foods are major contributors. Beyond appearance, obesity can trigger serious health problems like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

With many struggling to find time for exercise, people are turning towards natural and side-effect-free remedies—and Ayurveda stands out as a promising approach.

How Ayurveda Defines Obesity

Dr. R. P. Parashar, former Chief Ayurvedic Officer of Delhi MCD, explains:

  • In Ayurveda, obesity is called Sthoolata, which refers to the unbalanced accumulation of fat in the body.

  • This happens when the Kapha dosha rises and the digestive fire (Agni) weakens.

  • Ayurveda focuses on balancing digestion, metabolism, and phlegm to control weight gain.

Unlike allopathy, Ayurveda does not promise instant slimming. Instead, it emphasizes gradual, internal correction of imbalances for long-term results.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Obesity
  • Triphala Powder

    • A blend of amla, harad, and baheda.

    • Consuming it with lukewarm water at night aids digestion and gradually reduces fat.

  • Guggulu

    • A well-known Ayurvedic herb for reducing fat.

    • Enhances metabolism and helps burn excess body fat.

  • Green Tea & Herbal Teas

    • Helps eliminate toxins and supports fat reduction.

  • Lemon and Honey Water

    • Drinking warm water with lemon and honey on an empty stomach in the morning boosts metabolism and may aid weight loss.

  • Diet and Lifestyle According to Ayurveda

Ayurveda stresses that herbs alone cannot fight obesity. A supportive diet and lifestyle are essential:

    • Eat light, easily digestible meals.

    • Avoid fried, sugary, and heavy foods.

    • Follow timely meals, avoiding late-night eating.

    • Practice yoga and pranayama regularly.

    • Postures like Surya Namaskar, Kapalabhati, and Dhanurasana are especially effective.

    Weight Loss Takes Time

Dr. Parashar cautions that obesity cannot vanish overnight. Just as it develops gradually, it also reduces slowly. Ayurvedic treatments focus on internal healing and balance, leading to sustainable results when combined with a healthy lifestyle and exercise.

He advises: “Always consult a qualified Ayurvedic doctor before starting any treatment.”
