History and Significance of Dhanteras
According to ancient texts and legends, the story of Dhanteras is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantri, the physician of the gods and a divine incarnation associated with Ayurveda and healing. According to Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan, Lord Dhanvantri emerged from the ocean with the nectar of immortality and a pot of medicinal herbs. His appearance symbolizes the importance of good health and well-being, which is why Dhanteras is also celebrated as National Ayurveda Day in India.
Another popular legend revolves around the 16-year-old son of King Hima. As per the story, it was predicted that he would die of a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. However, his devoted wife devised a clever plan to save him. She surrounded their room with gold, silver, and other precious metals and kept him awake all night by telling stories and singing songs. When Yamraj, the god of death, arrived there in the form of a snake, he was blinded by the glitter of gold and was unable to enter the room. Thus, the life of King Hima's son was saved, and it is believed that this is the reason why people buy gold and silver on Dhanteras.
