Team India Star Shreyas Iyer Hospitalised Mid-Match, Concern Grows Despite Sydney Win

Even as India celebrated a resounding 9-wicket win over Australia in the final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the mood in the camp turned tense after Shreyas Iyer was suddenly taken to the hospital mid-match due to an injury.

Under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, India wrapped up the series 1–2, with Rohit Sharma’s century and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 74 powering the team to victory. However, the spotlight shifted when Iyer suffered a painful injury during Australia’s innings.

The incident occurred in the 34th over, when Alex Carey lofted a shot toward point. Iyer, running backward, completed a diving catch but landed awkwardly, injuring the left side of his abdomen (rib area). Though he held onto the catch, he was visibly in pain and unable to continue. The team physio rushed in, but after initial treatment failed to ease the discomfort, Iyer was escorted off the field and did not return.

Later, during India’s chase, uncertainty loomed over whether he would be able to bat. The BCCI soon released a statement on social media confirming:

“Shreyas Iyer sustained a rib injury to his left side while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation.”

The lack of an immediate medical update from the board left fans anxious about his condition.
