There is tremendous excitement among the audience about the crime thriller series 'Manavat Murders' streaming on Sony Liv. It has been just a week since the release of this series, but it is still being discussed a lot on social media. Many viewers are liking this series, but very few people know that this series is inspired by a true incident. The series depicts a horrific massacre that took place in Manavat village in Marathwada, Maharashtra. Its story is based on DSP Ramakant Kulkarni's book "Footprints on the Sands of Crime".
Disappearance of girls and women in Manavat village
In the 1970s, girls and women suddenly started disappearing from Manavat village. These disappearances created fear in the village. The women and girls of the village started avoiding going out of their houses out of fear, but still the series of murders did not stop. Initially, no one understood much about the first 6 murders. But when the seventh death occurred, a big revelation came out during the investigation, which shocked the whole country.
The horrifying sequence started with the death of a 10-year-old girl
Around 1972, a 10-year-old girl suddenly disappeared from Manavat village. Her body was found in a bad condition in a field. After this incident, many more girls and women started disappearing in the village. Their bodies were also found in bad condition in ponds, wells and fields. The killers used to disfigure the faces of these bodies badly to make them unrecognizable. This series of murders was creating an atmosphere of terror in the village.
Maharashtra's first serial killing case
After investigation, it was found that the masterminds behind these murders were a tribal woman named Rukmani and her lover Uttam Rao Barhate. Rukmani knew that she could never become a mother, but her desire to have a child persisted. On the other hand, Uttam Rao was greedy for gold. He believed that gold was buried under a peepal tree, but he was afraid of a ghost named Munja, who was said to live on the tree.
Sacrifice started at the behest of the Tantrik
Rukmani and Uttam Rao went to a tantrik named Ganpat Salve who told them that if a young girl is sacrificed they can get gold and Rukmani will also get a son. In this greed, the two planned a human sacrifice and started sacrificing young children. When this did not work, the tantrik suggested sacrificing menstruating women, after which the killings of women started.
Punishment of criminals
A total of 7 girls and women were brutally murdered in this case. After police investigation, Rukmani, her lover and others were arrested. However, Rukmani and Uttam Rao were released in 1976 due to lack of evidence in the court. But the four people who committed the murders were sentenced to death.
