'Kennel cough' is a form of infectious bronchitis caused by bacteria and viruses which causes various symptoms and can in serious cases last for up to six weeks.
Daniella Dos Santos, a senior vet at the UK's largest veterinary care company, IVC Evidensia, has shared urgent advice with dog owners.
IVC said: "Kennel cough is an infectious bronchitis caused by a combination of bacteria and viruses, causing a persistent, hacking cough. Other symptoms include retching and gagging, runny nose and sneezing, eye discharge, and - in more severe cases - fever and loss of appetite.
"While kennel cough usually lasts between one and three weeks, some symptoms can last up to six weeks. If your dog's symptoms worsen, contact a vet for advice - particularly if they show more severe signs such as nasal discharge, lack of appetite, and if they seem quieter than usual."
Owners of puppies, elderly dogs or dogs with underlying health issues should monitor closely, as there is a risk kennel cough can develop into pneumonia, Daniella warned.
Dogs can catch kennel cough through contact with another infected dog,or through contaminated surfaces such as bowls and toys. Dogs who are stressed, malnourished or regularly subject to cigarette smoke and dust are often more susceptible.
As it is highly contagious, owners are encouraged to keep infected dogs away from other dogs whilst they have symptoms and for 2-3 weeks after. Vaccination is the best method of protection, and owners can ask vets about adding this to their dog's vaccination schedule if they are concerned.
There is no specific test for kennel cough, but vets can make a diagnosis based on symptoms when they examine the dog.
Daniella added: "In terms of treatment, as long as your dog is healthy and living in a clean, well ventilated environment, they should recover within three weeks without further veterinary care. Anti-inflammatories may be prescribed to reduce airway inflammation and treat high fevers. Vets may also prescribe antibiotics if the infection is severe."
