A keen gardener has urged other green-thumbed fans to plant a whole host of vegetables in August in preparation for an autumn harvest. Paulina, who goes by Allotmentality on TikTok, revealed all of the wonderful things she's planting in her allotment for a full and bountiful harvest in both the autumn and for next spring.
Even though the weather can be hot in August, especially since the UK is experiencing another heatwave, there are still crops and flowers which are suitable for planting. Gardeners World explained that the best things to plant in August include veg that will give you short-term harvests, such as salad leaves and spinach, as well as those that can overwinter and provide early crops in late winter and spring, such as winter cabbages, broad beans and garlic.
If you're looking to get the most of your autumn harvest, you only have a limited amount of time left to plant a few particular crops. Paulina explained she's focusing on planting quick-growing root and leafy veggies.
These include carrots, turnips, Chinese cabbage, and kohlrabi. The first weeks of August are the last time to sow carrots for autumn, so if you haven't planted them already, you may have missed the boat.
Paulina said: "It's now or never for Swiss chard if you want an autumn and winter harvest. This month is a busy time to sow winter lettuce, radishes, and oriental greens."
For the likes of pak choi, mustard greens and winter hardy lettuce, sow these in small containers rather than directly in the ground. By planting them in containers, you can protect them from being eaten by slugs and snails.
In the ground, consider planting rocket and winter radish. Paulina continued: "With cooler weather ahead, these are less likely to bolt. That means going to seed before they're ready."
You can also get ready for next spring by planting a few crops now. Paulina chose spring cabbage, and onions of the August variety.
Spring cabbage works well as it will 'overwinter' and be ready to harvest in early spring. Overwintering refers to the process of surviving the winter season, often by enduring cold temperatures and limited resources.
August variety onions are seen as hardy, meaning it can tolerate low temperatures and can survive winter outdoors. Paulina explained that the name of this variety is a good reminder of when to plant.
Gardeners World warned gardeners to mind that the warm temperatures in August can encourage "quick germination", so you may need to provide more water to seedlings. It wrote: "During periods of extreme dry weather or drought, be aware that you may need to reduce your water use in the garden, so you might want to delay seed sowing until it rains again."
Here is a list of all the veggies you should consider sowing in August.
