Jack Draper felt the love of his home crowd at Wimbledon on Thursday, as the British No.1 watched the crowd break an unwritten rule in his name. Following a violation on Marin Cilic's behalf, the crowd erupted into thunderous applause, forcing the umpire to intervene and tell the audience to settle down to allow play to continue. Draper saw his Wimbledon hopes drift away once again this week, as he fell to a 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 defeat against the Croatian tennis star, despite his best efforts to claw back some shot at victory.
However, the 23-year-old will be buoyed by the support of his home crowd at SW19, as spectators showed up for the young tennis star in a big way throughout the match. In fact, they even decided to flaunt sport's unwritten rules to showcase how much they wanted him to win, as 36-year-old Cilic frustrated both player and crowd with his agonisingly long serve.
The match umpire handed Cilic a time violation early on in the third set, when he was 30-40 down, much to the delight of the audience members. Fans erupted into loud cheers and applause in Court 1, forcing the official to plead with the crowd to settle down.
BBC commentator Andrew Cotter said of the violation: "The timer [for players to complete a serve between points] did hit zero, but this is a big moment."
It is an unwritten rule at many sporting events - such as tennis and golf - for fans to remain silent about their feelings towards a player's misfortune. However, some frustrated viewers even urged the Croatian to 'hurry up' with his serve.
More outbursts could be heard when Cilic went to take his eventual serve, leading to another announcement from the disgruntled umpire, as he said: "Please, please...please guys, no more."

This pause in play and foul led to Cilic's serve being broken for the first time by Draper, who went on to win the third set in a dominant fashion. Fans even took to social media to complain about the veteran tennis player's behaviour, as one said: "Has any one ever bounced the ball before a first serve more than Marin Cilic?
Another wrote: "Waiting for Marin Cilic to stop bounce, pause, bounce again and serve at Wimbledon," as a third added: "F****** hell, Marin Cilic bounces his balls before each serve more often than Djokovic and Nadal could ever have dreamed of."
Despite the momentum threatening to swing back in Draper's direction, Cilic went on to get his victory to advance to the third round. Speaking after his monumental win, the 36-year-old said: "My emotions are just incredible.
"To play in front of this crowd and against Jack [Draper] is incredible, so thanks everyone for your great sportsmanship. It has been a long career for me. I have been really dedicated on training for my whole life and, of course, huge credit to my team and to everyone who is helping me on this journey.
"I've spent the last few weeks in the UK enjoying myself, playing through some Challengers and winning matches. I'm just feeling great and hoping I can continue to play well."
