I tried a new electric Mercedes and don't want to sit in the driver's seat ever again

There's usually a monumental argument about who is going to sit in the back on the next family road trip, but the latest EQS 450+ Business Class from has flipped that common debate firmly on its head. This latest Electric Vehicle (EV) from the German car firm is a luxurious battery-powered cruiser that effortlessly eats up those tedious motorway miles and, if you want the best seats in the house, you are definitely best in the back.

The model I tested offers all the opulence you'd expect from an executive saloon including reclining, sofa-style chairs that even have their very own soft pillows for the ultimate comfort. These exceptionally plush seats can massage your back and keep you warm or cool depending on the time of year. Rear passengers also get full dedicated climate control and a huge glass roof so you can watch the world go by.

To prevent boredom on long journeys, there are dual 11.6-inch TVs, an iPad-style controller in the armrest, and Mercedes-branded noise-cancelling headphones, should you forget to bring your own.

You can even press a button on the door, which automatically moves the front passenger seat forward to give you a feeling of sitting in a business class airline seat.

An ear-pleasing Burmester 3D Surround Sound System is also fitted, giving you some cinema-style audio from the comfort of the car.

The rear of the EQS 450+ Business Class really is a place to be. My only gripe is the lack of streaming apps on its screens (Disney+ is coming to Mercedes cars soon), and there's no easy way to beam video content from your iPhone directly to these displays.

Music apps such as Tidal and Spotify, along with full radio stations, are featured, but it would be nice to see Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV+ added in the future.

Although I loved sitting in the back of this car, the front seats are also a decent place to be, thanks to the expansive Mercedes Hyperscreen, which fills the entire dashboard.

This massive 17.7-inch main display shows directions and entertainment along with full access to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

You can also access all of the car's endless settings, switch on the incredible massage seats and change the mood lighting from the expansive panel. Front passengers even get their very own 12.3-inch screen to play on.

There's tons of tech to help make driving this car truly effortless, including adaptive cruise control, active steering assist, head-up display and augmented reality Sat Nav system. When you arrive at your destination, it can even park itself, which is handy considering its vast size.

Put your foot to the floor and it will hit 62mph in around 6 seconds and it will keep on going up to a top speed of well over 120mph.

It's a great car, and things are even better regarding range. I drove well over 200 miles from London to Bristol - and back again - and still had enough range in the battery for a further 150 miles of motoring. That's way better than any EV I've tested before and really does mean you can hit the road and finally forget about range anxiety.

The battery can be refilled from 10 to 80 percent in around 31 minutes, which is not ideal if you need to get somewhere fast, but a quick 15 minutes plugged into a rapid charger should give you enough power for 180 miles of driving.

The whole experience inside the EQS 450+ Business Class is one of total calm and even when things get rough you still feel won't feel the bumps along the way.

During my road trip, the M4 was closed, and I stupidly followed the Google Maps directions to get back on track. This took me on roads that were clearly built for Land Rovers or G-Wagons and not a space-aged business car. However, despite travelling on tarmac, which had definitely seen better days, the EQS 450+ Business Class took it all in its stride.

This is one seriously impressive car with a range that really shows what's capable with batteries.

It doesn't quite match the with that battery-powered machine getting a giant 31-inch Fire TV-powered display that magically drops from the roof and all offers fully reclining seats.

Mercedes also needs to improve the rear seat entertainment and add some more streaming apps. However, if you are lucky enough to be driven somewhere in this EV, you are in for a treat as it offers style and comfort in abundance.

It's also shown me what an electric car is capable of and, with the promising even longer range, it could soon be time to trust the power of batteries and move away from from petrol.

EQS 450+ Business Class prices start from a cool £119,000.
