A disturbing incident from Bengaluru has brought to light a growing issue of privacy violation on social media, disguised under the pretext of ‘street fashion’. A young woman recently took to Instagram to share her unsettling experience after discovering a video of herself being filmed without her knowledge on Church Street. The clip, posted by a page claiming to showcase street fashion, was shot without her consent and soon began attracting thousands of views online.
She explained that the video was recorded in an inappropriate manner and after it was uploaded, she began receiving vulgar and disturbing messages from strangers who had come across the reel. Despite her repeated attempts to have the video taken down, including reporting the content multiple times and trying to contact the account administrator directly, she received no response and no action was taken. Expressing her frustration, she confessed that she had not initially wanted to speak publicly about the issue but felt compelled to do so after exhausting all other options.
Her post also pointed out that this wasn’t an isolated incident. She noticed several other women being featured on the same Instagram page, seemingly unaware that they had been recorded. The account, named @IndianWalk, which had gathered over 11,000 followers, routinely shared videos of unsuspecting women walking on Bengaluru’s Church Street and Brigade Road, often shot from behind or at intrusive angles. Many of the women appeared visibly surprised to see a camera pointed at them.
Calling for accountability, the woman directly tagged Bengaluru Police in her post and asked her followers to join her in reporting the account, saying that collective action matters. “Numbers speak,” she wrote, hoping that a public outcry would prompt action.
Her call did not go unheard. Following her viral post, Bengaluru Police took cognizance of the matter and registered a suo motu case. The man behind the account, Gurudeep Singh, a resident of KR Puram, was arrested shortly after. Police stated that Gurudeep Singh had been sharing inappropriate content involving women and underage girls and an FIR was lodged against him for these activities.
Gurudeep Singh, who lives with his brother, is currently being interrogated by the authorities as they investigate the extent of his actions.
This case has sparked broader concerns about digital safety and consent in public spaces. What began as a woman’s personal plea for dignity has now become a call to action for others to stand up against invasive and unethical content online.
