When Aishwarya Rai Took A Dig At Sushmita Sen After The Miss India 1994 Pageant

Send Push

Aishwarya Rai and Sushmita Sen both rose to fame from the same glittering stage, i.e., Miss India 1994 where Sushmita took home the crown and Aishwarya emerged as the first runner-up. Their pageant journey marked the beginning of two remarkable careers, with Sushmita stepping into Bollywood with Dastak in 1996 and Aishwarya making her debut a year later in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya.

At the time, comparisons were inevitable and speculation about a simmering rivalry was a recurring theme in gossip columns.

That rivalry talk has returned to the spotlight, thanks to a resurfaced quote from Aishwarya’s 1997 interview with Movie Magazine.

In it, she reflected on Sushmita’s win at Miss India, stating, “Probably Sushmita always looked for fame, glamour, and money. For her, it was an all-time high to become famous. But I’ve always had these things, so it didn’t make any difference.” The remark, recently unearthed by Reddit users, quickly gained traction across social media.

Yet, not everyone is buying into the narrative of rivalry. Actress Maninee De, who was also a top 10 finalist at Miss India 1994, had addressed the long-standing rumours last year in a conversation with Siddharth Kanan. She was clear in her stance that there was no real animosity between the two stars, pointing out that both the women behaved with grace and maturity throughout the competition, especially considering how young they were at the time.

While old comments can stir fresh debates, those who witnessed the journey firsthand suggest the story between Aishwarya and Sushmita may have been more of media hype than personal discord. What do you think?
