Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday expressed his concerns that exit polls may be driving expectations and when the reality does not match the predictions, "serious issues" follow. "Actually I didn't want to touch the subject but since you are asking...," Kumar said during a press conference. "Exit poll ki aane ki wajah se, ek expectation set karne ki wajah se, ek bahut bada, distortion paida hua hai. Ye - aap sab log yahan hai - ye atma-chintan aur atma-manthan ka bhi vishaya hai khaas kar ke electronic media ke liye."
Kumar continued, "Pichchle kuch election se, do-teen cheeze ek saath ho rahi hai. Pehle ek exit poll aata hai. Vote counting is done on roughly the third day after polling ends. So exit polls drive expectations. Everybody thinks it will happen. There is no scientific basis for it. When counting starts - you start seeing leads and trends. But it is not as if the trends and leads are justifying the exit polls. We put updates at 9.30 am, 11.30 am, and then 1.30 pm. So we have exit polls driving expectations. Then initial trend may match, but later it might change, and that mismatch between expectations and reality can lead to serious issues sometimes.""Ye ek aisa vishay hai, jispe kuch na kuch manthan, self-correction ki zarurat hai," Kumar said.
