Cybercrime racket busted in capital city, six detained

Bhubaneswar: City police on Wednesday busted a cybercrime racket that was functioning from an apartment under the garb of a call centre in Sundarpada and detained six persons. Preliminary probe revealed that the cyber racket was functioning by installing several SIM boxes like devices.

“On inspection of the flat, it was found that the call centre was a fake one. Our team raided the place. The team found that six persons were using laptops and mobile phones and calling and receiving calls from the US,” said DCP Pinak Mishra. They detained persons have been identified as Sameer Mobin, 26, Md Javed Hussain, 26, Md Tosif, 23, Alam, 24, Sueb Raza, 22, Md Haider Ali, 34, all from Kolkata.

Police said the cyber frauds used e-mail bombarding method by using Notron and MACAFEE (anti-virus softwares) for phishing. They sent mails to people, who are subscribers of the antivirus by posing as staff of MACAFEE and Nortron customer care. When the customer calls the toll free number and when they receive the call, the call is redirected to skype call and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Then they remotely access by taking control of the system and with it all data, added the DCP.

Police have seized six laptops, 11 mobile phones and other incrementing documents and materials like fibre cables, Wifi set up, routers and towers. They have been booked under section 318(4), 319(2), 336(2), 336(3), 340(2), 338,61(2), 111(2) (b) of BNS Act and section 66(C), 66(D) of IT Act.

Fake call centre selling fraud car insurance busted, 12 held In Burari, New Delhi, police busted a fake call centre defrauding at least 50 people with counterfeit car insurance policies. They apprehended 12 individuals, including masterminds Nihal Khan and Deepu. The perpetrators recruited staff online and used four fake email IDs to send fraudulent insurance documents. They discarded SIM cards and phones to avoid detection.
