Chennai: Two autorickshaw drivers were arrested by the city police for threatening a group of guest workers and extorting money from them via UPI transactions.
The Aminjikarai police acted on a complaint filed by Vinoth Singh, 21, a native of Jharkhand, who arrived in Chennai with four friends in search of construction work. At the Chennai Central railway station, the group was approached by two auto drivers who offered to take them to a worksite in Madhuravoyal.
During the journey, the auto drivers went to a secluded area and threatened the workers at knifepoint. They then forced the victims to transfer ₹3,800 through UPI apps on their phones and left the place, police said.
Following complaint, police arrested the accused — E Vijay, 28, of Pudupet, and C Santosh Kumar, 22, of Otteri. They also seized the autorickshaws and mobile phones used in the crime. Both the men were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. MSID:: 120257638 413 |
