Kochi: Kerala has been witnessing a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases and deaths over the last week.
As of Saturday, the state has 1,336 active Covid-19 cases, and has reported six Covid deaths, according to data released by the Union ministry of health and family welfare. In contrast, the state had 430 active Covid-19 cases and two deaths on May 26.
Though the state continues to report the highest number of active cases in India, when it comes to Covid-19 deaths, Maharashtra now leads with seven Covid-19 deaths. In the current Covid-19 wave, India seen 26 deaths.
"Kerala continues to show a jump in active cases week on week. As of May 1, Kerala had 37 active Covid-19 cases; now it is 1,336," said Krishna Prasad NC, a state health department official who analyzed Covid-19 data since 2020.
Though there is a surge in Covid-19 cases here, it has not led to increased hospitalization. However, the aged and those with co-morbidities remain vulnerable.
