Nettoor market faces heat over filth

Kochi: Responding to mounting complaints from residents and councillors, the Maradu Municipality has finally taken action to address the unhygienic conditions at the Nettoor International Market. The health department conducted an inspection at the vegetable market, which has been under fire for the accumulation of rotting waste and persistent foul odour.

The inspection, led by a health inspector and a team of junior officials, resulted in notices being issued to 15 shops for failing to follow proper waste disposal practices. A separate notice was served to the market authority secretary, directing the immediate clearing of drainage canals and enforcement of cleanliness across the premises.

The market, which houses around 140 shops, has become a source of concern for nearby residents, who reported unbearable smells from decomposing waste. The unsanitary environment has sparked protests, with opposition councillors accusing the municipality of negligence, especially given the area's past recognition for effective waste management.

"If proper cleaning is not carried out, we will escalate the matter to the district collector. Shops have been given three days to ensure full compliance with hygiene norms," said municipality chairman Antony Ashanparambil.

Municipal officials admitted the delay in intervention was partly due to the market being under the jurisdiction of the agriculture department. However, with growing health risks and continued inaction by the market authority, the municipality stepped in.

Following the inspection, the market authority has written to the state govt requesting funds to conduct regular sanitation training programmes for vendors.
