How to unclog jam points as Noida International Airport gets ready? School of Planning and Architecture to help Greater Noida

NOIDA: The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has commissioned the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) to conduct an extensive study for identifying and suggesting solutions to manage the city's growing traffic chaos.

The study, GNIDA officials said on Sunday, will focus on two key spots in Phase 1 – Pari Chowk and Greater Noida West – where thousands of commuters navigate traffic snarls during rush hours every weekday.

The study will help identify the best ways to manage traffic better and prepare for the future, especially as the Noida International Airport (NIA) is set to be launched over the next few months.

"Pari Chowk and Greater Noida West are our focus areas in the first phase. Pari Chowk is the gateway to the city and will also have a rapid rail station. Traffic is already heavy there, and it will only get worse once the airport starts operating. Similarly, Greater Noida West, with its many housing societies, needs a planned and systematic solution," said Ravi Kumar NG, chief executive officer, GNIDA.

The authority is planning a road widening project and considering alternative routes to help decongest Pari Chowk. In one ongoing project, LG Chowk is being connected to Knowledge Park and onwards to Noida's sector 146-147 through a bridge over the Hindon River.

Further, SPA may consider solutions such as foot overbridges (FOBs) and redesigning the roundabout.

Officials said constructing and underpass at Pari Chowk may not be feasible because of the ongoing work for rapid rail through the area.

From time to time, the authority has come up with redesigning plans to decongest Pari Chowk, but it never came into form because of planned infrastructure projects in the city.

Similarly, for Greater Noida West, SPA experts will look into plans for widening roads, construction of flyovers and underpasses, along with improvement of public transport infrastructure.

Greater Noida West, lined with housing societies, is among NCR's fastest growing areas and its population is estimated to be over 2 lakh.

"The SPA study will help us find long-term solutions. The city is growing rapidly, and once the airport becomes operational in the coming months, we need to be fully prepared to handle the additional load," the CEO added.

SPA's study will examine the number of vehicles on all major roads in these areas and project future traffic patterns after NIA opens.

Other than construction of roads and elevated corridors, their recommendations may include a fresh traffic management system for the city.

Residents said that GNIDA must address other problems too while looking into traffic chaos.

"Illegal parking, road encroachments, potholes, and people driving on the wrong side -- these are common problems in Greater Noida West. Pari Chowk also needs better pedestrian infrastructure because people, buses and cars all take the route. Without proper public transport, auto-rickshaws and buses often operate in an unorganised and unsafe manner," said Sanjeev Verma, who lives in Sector 16 of Greater Noida.
