Varanasi: With 2,253 kW capacity rooftop solar panels installed by Apr, Varanasi Division of the North Eastern Railway (NER) had achieved its target of energy conservation, said Ashok Kumar, public relations officer.
The panels produced 394,000 units of solar energy by April this year, 2.59% more than solar energy produced during the same period in 2024 and saved approximately Rs 2,130,561 in railway revenue.
He said there was large-scale use of solar energy in the Varanasi Division, with use of energy-efficient equipment to save on consumption too.
Solar panels have been installed on roofs of railway station buildings, office buildings, service buildings, hospitals, training centres, coaching complexes, factories, guest houses, rest houses, auditoriums and level crossings.
He added that by Apr, Varanasi Division had installed solar power plants with a total capacity of 519 kW, including 141 kW at Banaras station, 71 kW at Mau station, 60 kW at Varanasi City Coaching Depot, 146 kW at Ballia station, 40 kW at Masrakh station, 35 kW at Gopalganj station and 26 kW at Thawe station.
In accordance with NGT standards, process of installing rooftop solar panels at other stations in Varanasi Division for the year 2025-26 is on.
