In the world of lotteries, stories of unexpected fortune and life-changing wins often captivate our attention. Whether it’s a modest investment or a creative approach to ticket purchasing, the thrill of hitting the jackpot transcends boundaries and brings a glimmer of hope to many. Here is the story of a man from North Carolina who won a $150,000 lottery prize after selling the pumpkins he sold during Halloween.

Pumpkin sale leads to life-changing lottery win for North Carolina man

A man from North Carolina won a $150,000 lottery prize, which is about Rs1.25 crore, thanks to a pumpkin he sold during Halloween. Roy Story, who lives in Hertford, said he bought a scratch-off ticket with $10 he received for a pumpkin he grew in his garden. He has a Halloween tradition of growing and selling pumpkins, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.

"I grow a few pumpkins every year and sell them. Someone gave me $10 for a pumpkin, and I used that to buy the ticket," Story said.
Instead of just grabbing a lottery ticket on a whim, Story went to Sun Farms on US 17 South in Elizabeth City with the plan to buy a $5 Xtreme Cashword ticket. He enjoys crossword games and plays all the available ones. This time, luck was on his side, but he didn’t realise how much he had won because he wasn't wearing his glasses. "I thought I had won $1,000," Story said. Now that he has won the prize money, Story plans to buy a new truck.

Extraordinary lottery wins: From $3 million jackpots to life-changing prizes

In a similar vein of luck, a 62-year-old man named Jose Duran from West Palm Beach, Florida, won a staggering $3 million (approximately Rs25 crore) Mega Millions jackpot after spending just $3 (around Rs250) on his ticket. Duran matched all five white balls in the draw held on April 11, 2023, purchasing his winning ticket from Supermercados El Bodegon on Forest Hill Boulevard. The retailer also benefited from the sale, receiving a $5,000 (around Rs4 lakh) bonus.

In another remarkable story, a woman from Frederick County, Maryland, experienced a life-changing moment after winning $500,000 (approximately Rs4 crore) from a Powerball Double Play ticket on September 25. Reportedly in disbelief, she hyperventilated and was completely “in shock,” as stated by the Mirror.

Earlier in September, in Massachusetts, Thomas Ensko had been using the same set of lucky numbers, inspired by his birthday, for two decades. This time, unsure of his luck, he purchased a Mega Millions lottery ticket from Anderson’s Variety Store in Blackstone. Ensko ended up collecting a remarkable prize of $1,000,000 (before taxes) at the Massachusetts State Lottery headquarters in Dorchester. Notably, Anderson’s Variety Store also celebrated, receiving a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
