While TikTok may be the birthplace of video trends, X is where all the mind-boggling trends that keep you awake at night begin. From the Ghibli trend to the 100 men vs 1 gorilla meme, X is the epicentre of any social media trend frenzy that takes over the Internet.
Recently, another trend has taken over the social media app where a user who goes by @CigsMake shared a photo with the caption, "The American mind cannot comprehend this " In the photo, a few people can be seen enjoying drinking beer and smoking outside a café in Spain. The post has garnered 78.5M views with 5.9K comments and 104K likes.
The photo was taken in Marbella, Spain and is reflective of European culture where people socialize and work in cafes ever since the 17th century. The cafe culture in Europe symbolises a more relaxed, slow life with friends and family.
Thus, the post took a subtle dig at the overworking culture followed by the American youth who have a planned to-do list, rush to work at offices and have to schedule a time to sit and hang out with friends.
It has created a hot debate in the comments section with Americans being offended by the post and mocking the European culture with tags such as "lazy" and "entitled" People have been referencing the gap in the GDP of the USA and countries like Spain, even mentioning the unemployment ratios in both, which is higher in Spain.
"The European (and other) minds cannot comprehend how they are able to live the way they live - and ignore the role of the US as the greatest and most powerful economy that has enabled a lot of what Europeans and others take for granted (and no, I am not just talking about WWII)" wrote a person in the comments. Another shared a photo of an office cubicle, writing, "The European mind cannot comprehend this."
Europeans on the other hand, feel no lag and are actually standing by their views on their own lifestyle. "You know why the American mind can’t comprehend this? Because in America, they programmed people to think everything has to be regulated, litigated, or guilt-tripped" wrote a person. "No regular person wakes up in the morning feeling proud that their country's GDP grew by 2%. GDP doesn't hug your kids, it doesn't give you sunsets, it doesn't make your life rich in any real way. Spain figured out something a lot of people haven't: a good life isn't measured in charts and numbers — it's measured in memories, time with people you love, and actually living." added another.
There were very few in the comments section who took the post as an enlightening reminder to slow down in life at times to enjoy all that one has, be it professional achievements or personal attachments.
With the ongoing tension between America and Europe, this social media war might not be the only one.

As an American, I think other Americans on here need to relax. The post is making a point to slow down. And yes, in many parts of the US Europeans don't visit, Americans do relax, but we could enjoy the moment with friends and family more. Leads to happy long lives.
