Randeep Hooda on being excluded from Highway promotions with Alia Bhatt: 'Ranbir Kapoor ka iss picture se kya lena dena hai'

Randeep Hooda, who is currently enjoying the success of his latest film Jaat with Sunny Deol, recently opened up about a professional setback from a decade ago. The actor revealed he was left out of the promotions for Imtiaz Ali’s critically acclaimed 2014 film Highway, which starred Alia Bhatt in the lead. In a recent interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Randeep admitted that the exclusion affected him deeply. “It felt bad,” he said, explaining that participation in the promotional activities could have helped his career at that point.

Didn’t understand why Ranbir Kapoor was there

Randeep also expressed confusion about actor Ranbir Kapoor’s involvement in the film’s promotions, given that he had no part in Highway.

“Maine bhi voh dekha aur mujhe bhi samajh nahi aaya Ranbir Kapoor ka iss picture se kya lena dena hai,” he said, adding, “Even I saw it and didn’t understand what Ranbir Kapoor had to do with the film.”

He then graciously acknowledged the relationship that blossomed between Alia and Ranbir, saying, “Maybe that’s where their love story began. I offer them my best wishes. If this film brought them together, I’m truly happy for them.”

Strategy was built around Alia

Reflecting on the marketing strategy of the film, Randeep shared that it seemed to revolve solely around Alia Bhatt. “Last ke 1-2 din shayad traction nahi pakad rahi thi, toh mujhe leke gaye the,” he recalled. “Maybe in the last day or two, the film wasn’t picking up momentum, so they included me.”

He further added, “From the beginning, the plan was to center the film around Alia. After all, the movie dealt with female exploitation. But once audiences saw it, they realised that without Mahabir Bhati (his character), the film wouldn’t have had the same impact.”

On the work front

Randeep was last seen in Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, where he portrayed the iconic freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The film featured Ankita Lokhande as Yamunabai Savarkar and also starred Amit Sial, Chetan Swaroop, and Rajesh Khera. His latest release, Jaat, is receiving positive response from audiences.
