What is ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ all about?
The trailer for 'Sitaare Zameen Par', featuring Aamir Khan in the lead role, was released on Tuesday. The 3-minute-long clip introduces viewers to a once-famous basketball coach who’s had a major fall from grace. After getting into trouble with the police and showing an insensitive attitude, he is ordered by the court to coach a group of people on the autism spectrum, along with a monetary fine.
Aamir’s production house described the film in a playful line: “1 Tingu Basketball Coach, 10 Toofani SITAARE aur unki journey.” Genelia Deshmukh plays his love interest in the story, adding a touch of romance to the sports drama.
The storyline clearly sets the tone for an emotional sports drama, but some viewers quickly spotted something familiar in it—and not in a good way.
Netizens call out ‘copy-paste’ plot
Not long after the trailer was released, X (formerly Twitter) was flooded with posts accusing ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ of copying ‘Champions’. This 2023 Hollywood film tells the story of a minor league basketball coach who is forced by the court to train a team of players with intellectual disabilities. And if that sounds familiar, it’s because the trailer of Aamir ’s film seems to follow the same plot beat for beat.
One user wrote, “Sitare Zameen Par is another cheap copy of the Spanish film Champions.”

What is ‘Champions’ and where did it come from?
The Hollywood film ‘Champions’ released in 2023, is actually a remake of a Spanish movie that came out in 2018. The storyline follows a hot-headed coach who is forced to train this team as part of his community service. So if we trace it back, the original idea is Spanish, which was then turned into a Hollywood film, and now appears to have been adapted again in Bollywood as ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’.
Interestingly, Aamir Khan’s film is listed on both Wikipedia and IMDb as being based on the same 2018 Spanish movie. This has made many social media users question whether this is an honest adaptation or just a lazy copy.
