Sarbartho Mani continues to take giant steps in international chess . The youngster from Kolkata bagged a bronze in the Under-10 open section of the World Cadet Chess Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan, recently.
This was Mani’s second podium finish in a global event this year after claiming gold in the U-10 open section at the World Cadet Chess Cup in Batumi, Georgia, in July.

Mani had a good chance of winning the gold in Almaty too but failed to finish off the way he started the tournament by winning the first six rounds. A rook endgame mistake saw him losing to Russia’s Aidan Gafurov in the 10th round and slip down the leaderboard.
That was eventually Mani’s only loss in the tournament as he scored 2.5 points in the last five rounds to end with 8.5 points in the 11-round tournament along with Leonid Ivanovic (of Serbia) and A P Chenitha Karusena of Sri Lanka.
However, Mani edged past the two to win the medal on better tie-breaks.
