GOA: At least six people were killed and over 60 injured in a stampede during the Shree Lairai Zatra festival in Shirgao village of Bicholim, Goa, on Saturday.
The six people who lost their lives in the Shirgao Jatra stampede have been identified as Surya Mayekar, a resident of Sakhali in Bicholim; Pratibha Kalangutkar from Kumbharjua; Yeshwant Kerkar from Thivim; Sagar Nandarge of Mathwada, Piligao; and Aditya Kauthankar and Tanuja Kauthankar, both residents of Auchit Wada, Thivim.
The deceased include two men and two women who were brought dead to the hospital, health minister Vishwajit Rane confirmed.
Of the 60 reported casualties, eight are in critical condition — including two who have been intubated — and have been referred to Goa Medical College (GMC) for specialised treatment.
Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that medical officers have been deployed at the Primary Health Centre in Bicholim, the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusaand Goa Medical College in Bambolim to ensure timely treatment of the injured.
Several injured are undergoing treatment at Asilo Hospital, while ten sustained minor injuries. Two people have been discharged after receiving medical care.
The state government initiated an emergency response immediately after the incident. “We dispatched five ambulances through 108 services to the site. Three were stationed at Asilo, and three more kept on standby until the situation stabilised,” said Rane.
He added that all necessary medical arrangements have been made and that the health department remains on high alert. “We are closely monitoring each patient’s condition. Nodal officers from GMC and Asilo have been appointed to oversee the response. Regular updates will be provided,” the minister said.
The cause of the stampede is yet to be officially confirmed. Authorities are continuing to assess the situation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Sawant to take stock of the situation and assured all necessary assistance. He also urged the chief minister to personally visit the injured and oversee their treatment.
