NEW DELHI: Gangster Sukhdool Singh Gill , aka Sukha Duneke, whose killing has reportedly been linked to Indian agencies in the latest round of the Trudeau govt's hostilities against New Delhi, was the arch rival of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi 's syndicate.
A prominent member of Bambiha syndicate , Duneke gained notoriety after kabaddi player Sandeep Nangal Ambian's murder in 2022, a crime that allegedly prompted Bishnoi to get Duneke eliminated in Winnipeg in Canada on Sept 20 last year.
However, contrary to the assertion made by Canadian authorities, Duneke was not killed a day after India put him on its "most wanted" list.
Duneke and a few other criminals were charged under UAPA on Aug 26, 2023, a month before he was killed, said sources. Duneke was charged with forming a group to recruit youngsters in India for carrying out targeted killings. "It was in a routine communication by NIA regarding action against gangsters that Duneke figured in a post on X, and that is now being linked to his killing," said a senior officer, adding that a linkage was sought to be made as part of an effort to engineer a case against India.
Known to be a close associate of Arshdeep Singh, alias Arsh Dala, Duneke, following the example of other criminals, fled to Canada in 2017 on a fake passport, less than a year after police bumped off his gang's kingpin Davinder Bambiha.
Punjab Police's anti-gangster taskforce discovered that Duneke had got a second passport issued with the connivance of some policemen posted in Moga, after the first one issued to him was confiscated.
While in Canada, Duneke and Dala managed to orchestrate the killing of UK-based kabaddi player Ambian in March 2022. It was through Dala that Duneke came in touch with slain Khalistan Tiger Force chief Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
