NEW DELHI: The Centre extended the tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood for another year on Wednesday, following a decision made in a meeting of the selection committee on Monday.
Sood took over as CBI Director on May 25, 2023, for a two-year term and is now set to continue in the role beyond May 24, 2025, following an extension.
The extension was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) based on the recommendations of the selection committee, which was headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi .
Other members of the committee included Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Praveen Sood was serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Karnataka before being appointed as CBI Director. He is also a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre.
Sood was born in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district in 1964. He joined the IPS at the age of 22 after completing his civil engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He also holds postgraduate degrees from the Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru, and the Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University in New York.
Sood has led investigations into several high-profile cases involving wealthy individuals and matters with interstate and international impacts.
His leadership has also been credited with strengthening the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems ( CCTNS ) and the Interoperable Criminal Justice System ( ICJS ) in Karnataka, in collaboration with the judiciary.
