Chinese students studying in the US are caught in the major crosshairs with the Donald Trump administration's crackdown on international students and the trade war between the US and China. China has already cautioned its students against studying in the US after many Chinese students had their student visas revoked.

An engineering student in Pennsylvania told the Wall Street Journal that he wasn't given any reason why his visa was revoked. "We pay too much money to experience this kind of nightmare," the student said. "I regret coming here". Another Chinese student in New York City told Journal that she had been going through her social media posts to see if there is anything that could cause her trouble. She said her parents have already urged her to come home. “I had never thought I would be scared about what I posted here in America,” she said.

Dartmouth PhD student Xiaotian Liu sues US government

Xiaotian Liu, a PhD student of Dartmouth College, sued Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem and Todd Lyons, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, after his visa was revoked without explanation. Liu said in his lawsuit that he had never committed a crime or participated in any protests. A federal court in New Hampshire restored his legal status and asked him to continue his research.

Chinese students were under scrutiny in Trump's first term

During Trump’s first term, Chinese students were under similar scrutiny. In 2020 alone, the visas of more than 1,000 Chinese nationals were revoked over such concerns, according to data provided by the US State Department.

Amid the ongoing trade war, MAGA activists are openly pitching for the deportation of all Chinese students.

US-China trade war: What does it stand?

China on Friday said it was raising its tariffs on US products to 125 per cent up from 84 per cent. The US tariff on China stands at 145 per cent. These are the latest tariff figures in the ongoing trade war in which no one has blinked yet. On Liberation Day, the US announced a 34 per cent tariff on China as other countries too got tariffs slapped on them. They approached the US for negotiation but China announced a retaliatory tariff. Trump announced a 125 per cent duty on Chinese goods which was added to a 20 per cent tariff that US imposed earlier in 2025.

China has also announced that it would cut down the import of Hollywood movies.
