Elon Musk , a former ally of US President Donald Trump , announced on Saturday that he has launched a new political party - ' America Party ', aimed at challenging what he called America's "one-party system."

Musk -- the world’s richest man and formerly one of Trump’s biggest donors in the 2024 election -- had a public falling out with the president after spearheading efforts to cut federal spending and reduce government jobs as head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency.
"Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom," Musk wrote, referring to a poll he had earlier conducted on X.
In the same post, Musk said, "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy."
Earlier, on July 4 during US Independence Day celebrations, Musk posted a poll asking, "Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?" The poll results showed 65.4% voting "Yes" and 34.6% voting "No."
Tensions between Musk and President Donald Trump flared again late last month after Trump pushed Republicans to pass his sweeping domestic agenda through the "One Big Beautiful Bill."
Musk strongly opposed the legislation, slamming it as "debt slavery" and criticizing Republican lawmakers who supported it despite campaigning on fiscal restraint.
He soon pledged to create a new political party aimed at challenging those he accused of hypocrisy. Economists estimate the bill will add $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.
Following Musk’s outspoken criticism, Trump lashed back -- threatening to strip federal funding from Musk’s companies and even suggesting possible deportation.
“We’ll have to take a look,” the president said when asked by reporters if he would consider deporting Musk, who was born in South Africa and became a US citizen in 2002.
Following his rift with Trump, Elon Musk has pushed the idea of launching a new political party -- a move that initially seemed unlikely for the South Africa-born businessman.
He had previously conducted a poll on X, which received an overwhelming response in favour of a third front beyond Republicans and Democrats. Musk has since proposed the name ‘America Party’.
