World Health Day is observed annually on April 7th to commemorate the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. Each year, the day highlights a specific health theme of global significance. In 2025, the theme is “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” focusing on enhancing maternal and newborn health worldwide.
The Significance of the 2025 ThemeThe 2025 campaign aims to address the critical need for improved care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. Despite advancements in healthcare, maternal and neonatal mortality rates remain alarmingly high in many regions.
According to the WHO, nearly 300,000 women die annually due to complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. Additionally, over 2 million babies die within their first month of life, and approximately 2 million more are stillborn.
Objectives of the CampaignThe “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures” initiative seeks to:
- End Preventable Maternal and Newborn Deaths: Encourage governments and healthcare providers to implement policies and practices that reduce mortality rates.
- Prioritize Women’s Long-Term Health: Emphasize the importance of continuous care for women beyond childbirth, addressing both physical and mental health needs.
- Promote Equitable Access to Quality Care: Ensure that all women and newborns, regardless of their socio-economic status, have access to essential healthcare services.
Several factors contribute to high maternal and neonatal mortality rates:
- Limited Access to Healthcare Services: In many low- and middle-income countries, women lack access to skilled birth attendants and emergency obstetric care.
- Socio-Economic Barriers: Poverty, lack of education, and cultural practices can hinder women from seeking timely medical assistance.
- Healthcare Infrastructure Deficiencies: Inadequate facilities, shortage of trained healthcare professionals, and lack of essential medical supplies compromise the quality of care.
To achieve the objectives of the 2025 campaign, the following strategies are essential:
- Strengthening Healthcare Systems: Investing in infrastructure, training healthcare workers, and ensuring the availability of necessary medical equipment and medications.
- Community Education and Engagement: Raising awareness about the importance of maternal and newborn health, promoting healthy practices, and encouraging community support.
- Policy Advocacy: Urging policymakers to prioritize maternal and child health in national agendas and allocate sufficient resources for related programs.
In India, maternal and newborn health has been a focus of various governmental initiatives. Programs like the National Health Mission (NHM) aim to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to all. However, challenges persist, particularly in rural areas where healthcare facilities are often limited. Efforts to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes include enhancing the quality of care in childbirth facilities, promoting institutional deliveries, and increasing community awareness.
Key Challenges in IndiaLimited access in rural areas: Many primary health centres lack trained staff and equipment.
Delayed care-seeking behaviour due to lack of awareness and transportation.
Undernutrition among women: As per the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5), 18.7% of women (aged 15–49) in India are undernourished (BMI <18.5).
Anaemia prevalence: Over 57% of Indian women are anaemic, affecting pregnancy outcomes.
World Health Day 2025, under the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” underscores the imperative to improve maternal and newborn health globally. By addressing the underlying challenges and implementing effective strategies, we can work towards a future where every mother and child has the opportunity for a healthy start in life.
